What is different from a fixed gear bike to a single speed, or geared bike, is that the sprocket is screwed directly onto the hub. This means the pedals are always in motion and there is no coasting on a fixed gear bicycle. Because most bicycle manufacturers do not mass-produce fixed-gear bikes, most people have taken it upon themselves to build their own using components they find online and from local bike shops. The first thing to look for is of course the frame.
When you are searching for a fixed gear frame, the most important thing is to make sure it has horizontal and not vertical dropouts. This is because you have to create tension on the chain by small forward or backward adjustments. Other than that, most road bike frames will work for fixed gear conversion. You’ll find that older, steel road frames already have horizontal dropouts. Popular vintage frames for fixed gear conversions are Peugot, Bianchi Pista and Raleigh.
Finally, when purchasing a frame to begin your fixed gear conversion, make sure it’s the right size for you and that you like the look of it (including the lugs, paint job, etc) because this is your base, and the starting point for your stylish new fixie.
